Commission a Portrait

The portraits are all based on an informal photo session and I prefer to visit people in their home so that the meeting is as relaxed as possible, especially when working with children. The session usually takes no more than a couple of hours during which time I can get to know the person I am painting and take away with me my impressions of their character and personality.

It’s important to remember that, although I use photography, this is not a ‘painting of a photograph’. I am painting my understanding of this person. The photographs are merely a starting point and a means of reference.

When choosing which shots to use for the portrait you can either leave the whole process to me or we can look through a selection of images and reach a decision together.

Before we begin, all aspects of the work are thoroughly discussed so that everyone concerned is comfortable with the project from the outset. I do recognise that a lot of trust is involved but I will always give each painting an unlimited amount of time and care in order to produce a portrait that we are all satisfied with.

All my work is in oils on linen canvas using the highest quality materials available

A non-returnable deposit of 50% is payable before work begins on the painting. This secures my commitment to  finish the work within an agreed time frame although flexibility is necessary as there is no limit to the hours I spend on each painting.

“The process was very easy for us and Terence traveled to both Suffolk and Manchester to meet our children. He caught the essence of each one of them, correctly reading their personalities which then shone through in their portraits. Terence made a potentially awkward situation comfortable, spending time to ensure everyone was happy.
